The tribe has many acres of farming land, which serve as not only their own source for food, but also as their primary source of income at market. Thus, the entire village participates in most all farming activities - which is a lot of work, all the time. Upon my visit to the Pamuca tribe, I was able to see firsthand how large the fields are and how hot it gets while farming.
In conversations with Patrick, he mentioned that the purchase of an ox (for roughly US$300) would allow for the tribe to increase their productivity, and therefore, be better positioned to increase their agricultural output. If this were to happen, not only would we ensure the ongoing food supply for the village, but we would help increase their ability to sell their crops at market.
In many ways, we are hoping that the purchase of an ox (and a plow) will help to stimulate the local economy of the village in a way that has never been done before. An investment, we feel, will end up paying for itself.
If you are interested in learning more about how you can help - in any way - please let us know. We're always interested in hearing from others who are interested in helping those in need in Uganda.
